Abysmal Grief is a Gothic Doom Metal band established in Genoa in 1996. The band was founded by the multi-instrumentalist Regen Graves, following the typical canons of the so-called Italian Dark Sound, and by combining to the music topics related mainly to Esotericism and Death, with literary and philosophical references to authors such as Eliphas Levi, Allan Kardec and Aleister Crowley. Stylistically the musical genre of Abysmal Grief takes up the typical canons of Doom Metal, with the addition of keyboards and synthesizers in the tradition of Italian horror soundtracks, combined with a mixed use of clean and screaming vocals. From 1998 the band released several albums and singles, always maintaining a constant line-up with Labes C.Necrothytus on vocals and keyboards, Regen Graves on guitars and drums, and Lord Alastair on bass, including occasional live drummers until the definitive recruitment of Lord of Fog in 2013. Abysmal Grief’s shows are known to be characterized by a massive scenography composed of statues crying blood, fog machines, candles, live worms thrown on the audience, and religious funeral objects (in the past actually stolen from cemeteries). Over the years Abysmal Grief have made many European tours as headliners, and have taken part in major festivals such as Roadburn, Brutal Assault, Heavy Days in DoomTown, Hell’s Pleasure, Chaos Ritual, Prague Death Mass and others. You cannot talk about the Italian Dark Sound without mentioning Abysmal Grief. Even if they started a decade later than their 80s Italian frontrunners, the Genova-based coffinshakers fashioned their very own brew of esoteric melodies and their discography are milestones for everyone into the dark, doomy, occult metal. The ceremonious and sinister feeling of their music, the forbidding atmospheres they create with their wicked riffs and threatening church organs, the maniacal vocals, the occult symbolisms, the definite dark ITALIAN aura are just a few aspects which makes them so very unique and raise them in their very own league.
