Australian death metal entity ALTARS rose from relative obscurity with the release of its 2013 debut album Paramnesia (Nuclear Winter Records/Blood Harvest).
Described as a ‘crucial balancing act between extremely modernist death metal ideas [and] just the right amount of classicist death metal forms and rhythmic phrasing’ (Grizzly Butts), the record would grow to become a monolith of avant-garde and dissonant-adjacent Australian death metal in the years beyond its release.
After a premature halt due to illness, ALTARS would reemerge in 2021 with the announcement of a new album and recruitment of Convulsing’s Brendan Sloan on bass and vocals. Filling the void left by the departure of Cale Schmidt (Monomakh), he would join drummer Alan Cadman (StarGazer) and guitarist Lewis Fischer (Ignivomous) in cementing the band’s lineup once more.
Ascetic Reflection (Everlasting Spew Records) is the long-awaited follow up to the bands debut — an evolution that reflects and expands upon the sound established by Paramnesia. Engineered, mixed and mastered entirely by the band themselves in January 2022 — Ascetic Reflection is an arcane and powerfully organic culmination of the renewed trio’s efforts.
Appearing live in Europe for the first time, ALTARS bring with it dynamic performances that entrap the psyche.
